What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency, launched in 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. It is a proof-of-work network with a fixed supply cap of 21 million coins, new coins issued to miners on a halving schedule, and no company or foundation in charge. Most other coins are quoted against it, and it sets the tone for the whole market.

A layer-1 coin trades on the network’s adoption and on the whole market’s risk appetite. Check where it sits against Bitcoin on the heatmap before crediting a move to the coin itself: most altcoin rallies are Bitcoin rallies with extra leverage.
