What is Ethereum?

Ether is the native asset of Ethereum, the smart-contract platform launched in 2015 that hosts most stablecoins, DeFi protocols and tokens (the ERC-20 standard). Since 2022 it runs on proof-of-stake; ETH pays for transaction “gas” and can be staked to help secure the network.

What to know before trading ETH

A layer-1 coin trades on the network’s adoption and on the whole market’s risk appetite. Check where it sits against Bitcoin on the heatmap before crediting a move to the coin itself: most altcoin rallies are Bitcoin rallies with extra leverage.

Whatever the coin, the arithmetic is the same: decide the dollar risk first, place the stop where the idea is wrong, and let the stop-loss calculator turn it into a size. If you are new, Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 come before any chart.

Questions people ask

What is Ethereum in one sentence?

Ether is the native asset of Ethereum, the smart-contract platform launched in 2015 that hosts most stablecoins, DeFi protocols and tokens (the ERC-20 standard).

Where does the ETH price on this page come from?

It ticks live from a public exchange WebSocket (Binance, Coinbase as fallback) and is backed by our market feed (CoinGecko, refreshed every minute) for market cap, volume and the all-time high.

Is Ethereum a good investment?

TradingPrimer does not give buy or sell advice. The page shows what Ethereum is, how it has traded and what risks come with its category; the decision, the size and the exit are yours — and the lessons on position sizing and drawdown are where to start before any of them.

Where can I trade ETH?

On most large exchanges. Our exchanges page compares the venues we use and says which links are referral links.

Prices tick from a public exchange WebSocket; market cap, volume, rank and all-time high from our CoinGecko-based feed (every 60 s); chart candles from Binance spot where a ETH/USDT pair exists. Descriptions are general and deliberately timeless — check the project’s own documentation for current specifics.

Risk reminder: nothing on this page is a recommendation to buy or sell Ethereum. Most retail traders lose money.
